History

LAN parties from early UNIX single-player games such as Larn, Hack, Rogue, and Hunt the Wumpus and were played primarily by students who had access to computers used for schoolwork and although these UNIX games were primitive they were about to give birth to a global-wide culture.


MIDI Maze (1987)

Then MIDI Maze was released and LAN parties hit another burst of growth. It allowed up to 16 players to connect computers together to play together with each other over a makeshift network.


Doom is released (1993)

Then in 1993 Doom was released by Id and what MIDI Maze’s developers dream for Midi Maze had been launched Doom into the next generation. It allowed up to four players to cooperate in the singleplayer campaign or to fight it out deathmatch style.


Quake is released (1996)

The true growth of LAN parties is attribute to Quake which Id released a share ware version of in 1996. It is recognized as the game that caused the explosion in LAN party growth especially since at the same time a lot of networking companies were releasing low-cost networking packages as well as Microsoft releasing Windows 95 which allowed for easy networking.
